At the beginning of February, we hosted an exciting workshop with lighting expert and Elinchrom Technical Director, Simon Burfoot, also known as The Light Doctor. Over the course of two days, professional photographers had the chance to learn a range of introductory and advanced techniques using state-of-the-art Elinchrom equipment. Find out more about the courses below and sign up to our waiting list for more lighting workshops coming up this year.

Day 1: Introduction to Studio Lighting

The first day starts with the most common mistakes beginner photographers make when buying studio lights for the first time, such as flat lighting and positioning a light straight in front of the subject. Each lighting demonstration has allotted time for attendees to capture on camera to better understand the individual setup.

Using different equipment, Simon demonstrates and compares alternative lighting conditions, such as a high-contrast reflective umbrella to the softer light of a translucent shoot-through umbrella. Delve into the importance of using a light meter to achieve correct exposure and to avoid over-relying on your camera screen, often known to be misleading.

Introduction to Studio Lighting - Rembrandt Lighting

Classic and advanced techniques will be shown such as the Rembrandt lighting arrangement. This will be demonstrated to highlight the differences between harsh, specular lighting compared to softer, diffused light. Learn how small adjustments to the position of your light, angle and placement can dramatically transform the final image and gain the best results.

A tasty lunch is always included, followed by an exclusive behind the scenes lab tour of our Hertfordshire workshop. Meet the team that brings your products to life and learn more about the different print processes available. The afternoon then explores a butterfly lighting setup using a softbox, creating a more dynamic and visually interesting portrait with added depth.

Attendees are always encouraged to use their cameras throughout each setup, providing valuable experience as well as content for you to use and refer back to.

Day 2: Advanced Studio Lighting

Day 2 begins with a deeper delve into butterfly lighting without diffusion, testing different light modifiers to create contrast. Master when each modifier should be used and what subjects they are best suited for. Simon also demonstrates how using a hair light can help to separate the subject from the background, creating more depth.

As part of the incredible showcase of equipment from Elinchrom, you’ll have the opportunity to test their easy-to-apply gel covers to transform the colour of your background quickly, without the hassle of carrying around extra backdrops. Create complimenting colours or contrasts to suit your style and test these with your own camera in the session.

Develop your understanding of professional studio lighting and move your business forward. Understand what mistakes to avoid, best practices for lighting different subjects or environments and how to improve your images in-camera to save post-production time.
